Moving in the right direction
Statement from Fearns Community Sports College regarding Ofsted HMI monitoring inspection
Headteacher Helen Stead said: “I was delighted when the inspector said in her report that, ‘Fearns has finally started to move in the right direction’ and she noted that our Years 7 and 8 intake is higher than in previous years.
“Improvements at Fearns have been identified by the inspector including that marking has improved considerably and new leadership of the management of pupils’ behaviour has already had a positive impact.
“The inspector noted that pupils said they feel safe in Fearns and they spoke fondly that, because our school is small, there is a strong sense of community and people look after each other.
“She also commented on how our pupils show a pride in their school and in general are sociable, friendly and polite.
“Early signs of improvement in the quality of teaching were noted, as a result of the leadership and management of teaching being more stringent and expectations being made clearer.”
Mrs Stead said the school’s leadership team was already working on the areas for improvement identified in the report and immediate steps have already been taken to provide support for Key Stage 4 pupils to ensure they reach their potential.
She added: “Fearns will continue to build on this report and continue to work hard for our community and our pupils.
“I would like to thank staff, governors, parents, pupils and our local community for their continuing support.
“Our pupils have shown unwavering loyalty to Fearns. I am pleased to read in this report that our pupils recognise the improvements that our school has made, continues to make and aspires to make in the future.
“As a school community, we are all determined to support each other to make sure that our school continues to move in the right direction.”
