Diana Award for Fearns Youth Councillor Leon
YOUTH councillor Leon Yilmaz was honoured to receive a Diana Award in recognition for his contribution to society.
14-year-old Leon, a Year 10, at Fearns has been on the Youth Council at The Zone in Rawtenstall for about two years.
He said: “I went to a ceremony at Leeds College of Music and it was a bit nerve wracking when I was called up to receive my award because there were a lot of people there.
“At The Zone I have done mental health training and that means I can recognise when people have an issue and try to help them.
“I got involved in group discussions and also got involved in a ballot to elect youth councillors.
“I have also promoted the Youth Council within Fearns.”
Leon has also been involved in a project at County Hall looking at youth groups in Japan and comparing them to the UK.
One of his Diana badges has a quote from the Princess of Wales. It says ‘Young people have the power to change the world’.
He said: “Being on the Youth Council means you get to help the community, you can try to make Rossendale a better place and you can try toget the voice of young people heard.”
As Leon’sdad is Turkish Head of Languages at Fearns Mr Ribot has enabled him to sit his GCSE in the language, along with Spanish.
He hopes to become a footballer, an interpreter for the police or a computer programmer.
