The pupil premium is a government initiative designed to target resources on those pupils deemed to be from a disadvantaged background.  Specifically, the pupil premium money is provided for those pupils who have been on Free School Meals (FSM) at any point over the last six years (Ever6) or those pupils who have been looked after continuously for at least 6 months (CLA).  For the year 2017-18 the pupil premium has a value of £935 per eligible pupil.  The government do not dictate how this Pupil Premium money should be spent but what is clear is that the money should be used to promote strategies which ‘narrow the attainment gap’ between the highest and the lowest achieving pupils in our school.

Our school is much smaller than the average-sized secondary school.  The proportion of pupils supported by the Pupil Premium is high, at approximately 25% above the national average and rising.

Fearns Community Sports College is a small comprehensive school with approximately 55% of pupils being eligible for the Pupil Premium funding.  No single intervention provides a complete solution to the complex educational issues in any school therefore we adopt a multifaceted approach to the spending of the extra funding in order to provide the best opportunities for those disadvantaged pupils to succeed.  The key to narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest achieving pupils is careful and thorough monitoring/tracking of pupil attainment and progress.  We have a mapping system in school to track intervention and progress.  We pride ourselves in taking great care to cater for the individual needs of our pupils.

Regular data is collected on academic achievement and attitudes to learning (ATL) which can be accessed by staff, parents and pupils.  This tracking then informs effective interventions, specific to the immediate needs of the individual and not simply generic strategies.  For example:

  • CPD to support effective teaching and learning in the classroom
  • Learning Support/Teaching Assistants/Pastoral Support
  • AAHT with responsibility for intervention
  • Additional staffing for intervention and support activities
  • Alternative provision and tailored curriculum provision
  • Attendance manager visits to disadvantaged pupils
  • Attendance monitoring and focus groups
  • KS3 nurture group
  • Holiday revision and exam preparation sessions including resources
  • Literacy testing and improvement activities including support of the Accelerated Reader programme
  • Educational and motivational trips and visits
  • Summer school
  • 1-1 tuition and support
  • Assertive mentoring
  • Careers guidance and counselling (CEIAG 1:1 interviews)
  • Addition of an extra English and Maths set in KS4 to give smaller class sizes for those pupils in need of closer monitoring/intervention and an extra English lesson in Year 10
  • Family support for those in need

This is reviewed on a regular basis, in some cases termly and others annually.  The Pupil Premium funding is spent in a variety of ways with the direct and explicit aim of narrowing the attainment gap between the highest and lowest achievers.  This has included investment in both pastoral and academic initiatives.  All members of staff and governors accept responsibility for ‘socially disadvantaged’ pupils and are committed to meeting their pastoral, social and academic needs within the school environment.
