Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG)

Welcome to the Careers section of the School website. I am the School’s Careers Coordinator and it is my job is to make sure that pupils have access to a range of different experiences, support and resources to help them to make informed choices about their post-16 options and future careers.

I run a Careers Resource Room which is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during term time.  Prospectuses and application forms for all local education and training providers are available in the Careers Resource Room along with a range of information about career choices.  There is also a wide range of university prospectuses available.

Pupils can use a networked PC to access the School’s online careers resource, ‘CASCAID’ and other career resources to help them assess their skills and competencies and gather ideas about different education and career choices.

I operate an open door policy during break and lunch times on these days so all pupils can drop in and access a range of career support.  Pupils can also make an appointment to see either myself or the School’s Careers Adviser, Mrs Whittaker (in School every Wednesday during term time) for a careers interview which will take between 20-30 minutes.

 Advice and guidance is available on all careers related topics including:

  • getting general advice and guidance on future career plans;

  • access to  a wide range of  up to date information on post 16 options, including open day information;

  • help filling in application forms, preparing for interviews and producing a cv;

  • applying for apprenticeship vacancies;

  • making contact with local colleges and apprenticeship schemes to check progress on applications, check entry requirements or find out more about a particular course.

I also attend most Parents’ Evenings and I’m very keen to meet and chat to as many parents as possible about their child’s career aspirations.

Frequently asked questions by Year 11 pupils:

Q: I don’t know what I want to do when I leave school, how can I decide?

A: Make an appointment with Mrs Ashworth in the Careers office and you can use the online careers tools to help identify your skills and preferred learning style.  You can then look at different post-16 options that match your profile and your projected GCSE results. It is also advisable to go along to open days for as many different colleges/sixth forms and/or training providers as you can before you apply as they are all different and offer a variety of different learning and social experiences.

Q: Can I apply to more than one college or sixth form?

A: Yes – it’s advisable to apply to at least three places, so you have a back-up plan if you don’t get the grades you need for your first choice

Q: How do I apply?

A: You can get application forms from Mrs Ashworth or directly from the training provider. Please hand any application forms that require a School sign off to Mrs Ashworth.  You can also apply on-line to many of the providers.  Mrs Ashworth is keeping a record of all Year 11 applications so please notify her of any applications you submit so she can log them on her database.

Q: I don’t know how to fill in some parts of the application form, what shall I do?

A: Go and see Mrs Ashworth and she will help you complete the form and check any target grade information on SIMS.

Q: Do I need my Progress File?

A: Yes, send a copy of your Personal Statement with your application, it really helps the colleges to learn more about you. Take your Progress File to interview, it highlights all your qualities and skills and helps you to sell yourself.

Q: When should I apply?

A: As soon as possible – early applicants get the most choice.  The School deadline for applications is the last Friday in November.

The School has purchased a license for the online Careers tool CASCAID.  All pupils will be provided with a user name and password for CASCAID as part of their PSHE class.  Some pupils may already have had an account set up as part of a one to one Careers interview.  Any pupil can call in to the Careers Resource Room and Mrs Ashworth will set them up with a CASCAID account if they don’t want to wait for their PSHE lesson.   The website address is www.cascaid.co.uk
